What is the cost?
HOA often does cost money. Most of the time, you pay a one time fee in the beginning and you pay monthly just as you would with a gym membership. Remember to calculate this in your monthly mortgage costs so you don’t go over your budget. The cost is determined based on what amenities the HOA offers the community.
What is covered?
At the bare minimum, the HOA fees include upkeep of the community areas. The HOA usually takes care of a majority of your outdoor upkeep so you don’t have to worry about it. There is typically a packet describing what the HOA fee covers.
What are the rules?
Again, there is usually a packet for the rules, but the rules might include who and when people can visit, the hours of the facilities, when garbage is taken out, etc.
Are you happy the way the home looks?
The outside look of HOA homes tend to look the same because the HOA dictates the colors and sort of trim you can have, so, if you want to change things, make sure to check with your HOA.
Can you get involved?
The HOA usually has some sort of board of homeowners so just ask! If you don’t want to be on the board, you can also vote on things in your community through the HOA.
