If you are a pet owner, make sure to keep your animals’ needs in mind during your home search.
If you’re buying a home and you have any pets or plan on owning any in the future, there are a few extra things to think about during your home search.
First of all, think about any local pet laws. If you’re going to live within an HOA, there might be restrictions or regulations on the number of pets you can own as well as what kinds of pets you may keep. You may also want to check if there are any ordinances or noise restrictions if you have a breed of dog that tends to bark loudly or frequently.
Also, make sure the property has a fence if you plan on owning an animal which will require time outdoors in your yard. If a property doesn’t come with a fence, be sure to find out whether there are any restrictions on the materials you may use to build a fence or on how high your fence can be.
The third thing you need to think about is where your pets will exercise and play. Is the area around your new home suitable for pets? A neighborhood with a lot of sidewalks or one in close proximity to a park will be a big plus when it comes to walking your dog. Heavy traffic in the area is another thing to consider, as it can be dangerous for you and your animals.
The next point is one people often forget to think about: Are the floors safe for pets? Solid hardwood floors are a great way to go since you can always restain them if scratches arise. Definitely avoid wall-to-wall carpeting, for obvious reasons.
Also, any home you’re going to share with pets will need to have enough space. If the floorplan isn’t very open or lacks square footage, you’re going to be tripping over your pets on a regular basis.
Finally, ask yourself if your pet can handle stairs. Just like us, certain pets tend to develop joint problems as they age and will struggle going up or down steps. If you do have stairs in your home, consider having a carpet runner on them. This is one of the most-requested items for pet owners with stairs in their home.
